Stage A Nomination | Stage B Submission | Important Notes

The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize is awarded to cities only. Application for the Prize is in 2 stages as follows:

Stage A Nomination

i. Introduction

The Stage A Nomination(s) must be initiated by independent third parties i.e. "Nominator(s)". Cities that are interested to participate in the Prize may wish to approach a Nominator to nominate them. Likewise, the Nominator should inform the city of their intention to nominate them.

The Nominator may be someone who belongs to any of the following categories:

  • Leading academics (e.g. professors in universities)
  • Government officials (outside of the city administration)
  • Heads of international organisations in the fields of urban planning, housing, transport management, urban design and architecture, energy conservation, urban policy and management, or other relevant fields
  • Organisations in the public or private sectors
  • Non-government organisations (NGOs)
  • Academic institutions

Self-nominations (i.e. nominations made by the city administration for their own city) are strictly not accepted.

ii. Making the Nomination (by the Nominator)

The Nominator must make the nomination for each city using the official Nomination Form, accompanied by a signed Recommendation Letter (maximum 600 words). In the Recommendation Letter, the Nominator should make a case to support why the city should win the Prize, and could address (but not limited to) the following points:

  1. Outstanding leadership and governance
  2. Successful urban transformation and / or urban solutions with long-term impact
  3. Creative / innovative urban solutions
  4. Potential good learning points for other cities around the world

Stage B Submission

i. Introduction

Following a valid Stage A Nomination, the city will be notified via email to prepare and submit a detailed report for Stage B Submission. This report shall be prepared by the city administration after Stage A Nomination.

ii. Preparing the Submission (by the city)

There are five (5) parts to the Stage B Submission:

Part 1 Background of the city and key statistics To be completed using the official Stage B Report Template
Part 2 Overall master plan or strategy of the city / region
Part 3 3 demonstration projects to illustrate the success of the master plan / strategy
Part 4 High-resolution photos

To be completed using the official Photo Report Template

The Photo Report should include the following:

  • Photos showing the overview of the city
  • Master plan and other plans (if applicable)
  • Photos showing the situation of the city before and after the urban transformation
  • Photos of the 3 demonstration projects, including photos showing the situation before and after their implementation.
Part 5 2 - 5 Reference letters

Please provide at least two (2) but not more than five (5) reference letters written and signed by independent third parties. Reference letters can also be written by the Stage A Nominator(s).

The reference letters (maximum of 600 words each) should describe, explain and highlight the role of the key leader(s) and / or partner organisation(s) in the conception and implementation of the overall master plan / strategy and the demonstration projects.

Optional Additional supporting documents (if any) The city may wish to submit additional supporting documents such as city reports, news articles, videos, testimonials or any other relevant materials to support the submission. Please note that only Parts 1 - 5 will be used as the primary evaluation material.

iii. Making the Submission (by the city)

Important Notes

  1. Cities that have submitted for previous cycles of the Prize will need to make fresh submissions as reports and materials submitted previously will not be considered.
  2. Submissions postmarked or received by hand after the closing date will not be accepted.
  3. The city shall be responsible for the safe and timely delivery of all submission materials.
  4. The Prize Secretariat reserves the right to disqualify any submission that is incomplete, and/or not prepared according to the guidelines above.
  5. The Prize Secretariat may arrange for site visits to the city where necessary. All costs for such a visit shall be borne by the Prize Secretariat.
  6. The Prize Secretariat may request for additional detailed information where necessary.
  7. The Prize Secretariat will retain all submitted digital media and reserves the right to use them for all Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize related publicity collaterals and activities (e.g. exhibitions, lectures, publications, website, etc.).
